Full description

English Heritage, 05/02/2015, Okehampton Camp. Various Buildings - Batch 1. EX20 1QP (Correspondence). SDV357838.

English Heritage has been assessing a number of buildings at Okehampton Camp for addition to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Following an initial assessment of Building 70 it has been decided not to take the building forward to a full assessment. The building will not, therefore, be added to the List at this time.
Despite the historic interest granted by its location at Okehampton Training Camp, the building is considered to have no special architectural interest and does not meet the criteria for designation for the following principal reasons: Rarity: while this is a fairly early example of a married quarter block, it is not the earliest and better examples survive elsewhere; Lack of group value: it does not form a coherent group with other structures of its date.

Three detached bungalow-like married quarters (Buildings 70, 114 and 115). Buildings 70 and 114 were built prior to 1906 and Building 115 was completed in August 1924. All three buildings originally had two bedrooms but Building 115 was extended circa 1930 with the addition of a third bedroom. All three have different floor plans. The buildings are constructed with corrugated iron on a timber frame and clad internally with tongue and groove boarding. The roofs are also clad with corrugated iron. Buildings 70 and 115 are still used for accommodation, Building 114 is the camp staff rest room. Map object based on this source.
