Full description

English Heritage, 05/02/2015, Okehampton Camp. Various Buildings - Batch 1. EX20 1QP (Correspondence). SDV357838.

English Heritage has been assessing a number of buildings at Okehampton Camp for addition to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Following an initial assessment of Building 78 it has been decided not to take the building forward to a full assessment. The building will not, therefore, be added to the List at this time.
Despite the historic interest granted by its location at Okehampton Training Camp, the building is considered to have no special architectural interest and does not meet the criteria for designation for the following principal reasons: Intactness; the building has been considerably altered through extension and internal reordering.

The staff sergeant and sergeants mess (Building 78) was originally built in 1894. At this time it comprised a mess room, kitchen, cook's room, scullery and beer cellar with a coal store and larder in a small annexe. An annexe was added to the rear of the building in 1908 with a connecting corridor and steps to take account of the difference in floor levels. It functioned as a billiard room as well as a reading and writing room. A new cook's room was also added against the original, small annexe and another extension was added against the west elevation of the building to serve as a store. Another mess room was added against the front elevation circa 1929 and since then the building has only undergone miner alterations. The original building was constructed of limestone blocks with brick quoins and dressings under a natural slate roof. The walls were cement rendered probably during the building alterations in 1908.
