Summary

These cottages date to at least the early 19th century, based on cartographic evidence, although they may be older. The basic layout has remained largely unchanged from the 19th century and they retain group value as a cherished part of historic Buckfastleigh.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Depicted on the Tithe Map as a continuous row of dwellings fronting onto the south side of Silver Street. Some variation to the rear of the properties. No individual divisions depicted.

The late 19th century historic map shows the terrace and largely matches the Tithe Map, although the separate properties are depicted.

Cottages on Silver Street: Unlisted
The row of cottages on the southwest side of Silver Street are individually modest and some have had alterations that have reduced their historic character. Together they have great group value and are a cherished part of historic Buckfastleigh.

The modern map shows little has changed to the main section of the terrace. At the south-eastern end some alterations have been made to the end of terrace (no 1 Silver Street) and at the north-western end of the row some of the buildings that were located behind (south of) numbers 17 and 18 are now gone.
