A small area of possible orchard tree planting banks of possible post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and 1960s as earthworks to the south of Hele Cross. The banks are around 5 to 6 metres wide and orientated roughly north-west to south-east, across the contours of the slopes overlooking the Culm Valley. The aerial photographs reveal evidence of possible springs rising in this area and such banks were made to aid drainage in orchards. However, the earthworks do not correspond with any orchards mentioned in the Tithe Apportionments for Broadclyst or depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map, which might support the interpretation that an orchard had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. Alternatively, the earthworks might have been made simply to aid drainage in an area of pasture. The earthworks are not visible on images derived from lidar and have probably now been levelled.
