One of Exeter's favourite open spaces, Heavitree Pleasure Ground was opened in 1906 by the Heavitree Urban District Council. Originally designed by Veitch Nurseryman FW Meyer, the site was intended to be used for community recreation. Today the park combines a wide range of leisure facilities for the city's residents with a strong horticultural heritage. Facilities for picnicking, skateboarding, basketball, BMX, tennis, bowls and play, make the pleasure ground a favourite family day out. The Pleasure Ground is not to be confused with the nearby Heavitree Park, a 19th century residential development of villas around a communal garden.
