Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1950 onwards, at Ash Thomas. The site of the orchard is largely symbolised on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. Aerial photographs of 1950 show that the orchard trees remain largely intact, although faint traces of earthwork banks are visible to the west of the site. By 1966 the fruit trees have been almost completely grubbed out, although the earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, are not clearly visible until aerial photographs of 1996. The surviving banks are northeast to southwest aligned and occupy an area of approximately 0.77 hectares of gentle northeast facing slope, within two rectilinear shaped plots depicted on historical mapping. The earthwork banks remain visible on digital images derived from Lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010.
