Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Tithe Map shows Sampford Barton; 163 on apportionment (houses and courtlage). The farm consists of a central dwelling with an inverted U-shaped range of farm buildings to the north. A number of other individual buildings are scattered around the farmyard. Gardens, orchard and mowhay are also detailed, as well as a linhay with court at the south of the farm.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows the layout has not changed much since the Tithe Map depiction.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Sampford Barton is unchanged from the late 19th century historic mapping.

Royal Air Force, 1946 - 1949, Royal Air Force Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV342938.

Aerial photograph shows much the same layout of buildings that can be seen on earlier historic mapping. Later aerials from the end of the 20th century show a number of new buildings have been added.

White, P., 2013, Previously Unsurveyed Dartmoor Historic Farmsteads (Un-published). SDV352501.

Included in list. No further detail provided.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

The modern map shows that little remains of the original farm layout; other than the farmhouse and barn. Modern buildings stand to the north, built over the U-shaped range of buildings and to the south of the farm, overlying the linhay depicted on the Tithe Map.
