On the 1803, 2" drawing, this hill is called "willman hill".(dark hachuring on the drawing has tended to obscure the printing somewhat but it does appear to be willman and not windmill). This may of course have been a corruption either way. The hill is annotated "windmill hill" on the 1809 1", which was based on the 2" drawing. The 1840 tithe map, shows a ring of coniferous trees with the apportionment number 1244 but it is not annotated and there is no indication of a building on the map. This tree ring lies in a field, and it is this field which is listed in the apportionment under number 1242 as "windmill down". The name "windmill hill clump" on the 1890 6" and the 1954 1:2500, obviously refers to the plantation, now deciduous with slight scrub undergrowth, and would presumably have been a reasonable situation for a windmill being on an isolated hill summit at 165m od. It is the highest hill in the area with magnificent 360 degree panoramic views (sainsbury).
