Full description

Hullmandel, C. J., 1839-1840, The Downlands Landslip 1839-40 (Illustration). SDV358964.

Two postcards, one of the wheatfield which was on level ground when sown, and survived the collapse. Crowds came to watch when it was harvested. The other is of the Dowlands Landslip looking east, the area heavily overgrown with trees.

An area labelled as 'The Landslip' is shown on both the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps to the north of Culverhole Point. The layout of this area of land coincides with the layout of plot 383 on the Axmouth Tithe Map of 1842.
