A large probable extraction pit is visible as an irregularly-shaped earthwork, 60 by 90 metres across, on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured in 2010. A stream, issuing from a spring to the east, runs alongside a field boundary that bisects the pit, and the boundary is depicted on the Tithe map. The pit is not specifically depicted on the available historic mapping, but the part north of the field boundary corresponds to an irregular area of broadleaf woodland and scrub depicted on the late-19th century map. The disuse of the pit therefore appears to pre-date the mid-19th century.
