These alleged barrows are no more than the natural ground surface left between the surrounding pits. The whole of Gittisham Hill is covered with similar pits.

Irregular in shape and most definitely not barrows.

Exeter Archaeology, 2003, East Devon Heathlands Archaeological Survey, 18, Part 1; 135, Part 2: Gazetteer, Site No. 381 (Report - Survey). SDV101648.

SMR records several barrows marked on 1:10560 map, excavated in 19th century, finds from which included charcoal, flint flakes and bronze fragments. Barrows surveyed in 1958 when locations given as grid references SY 1475 9745, SY 1476 9743, SY 1479 9744 and SY 1477 9742. It has since been suggested that the surviving features in this area are not barrows, but merely the natural ground surface left between the surrounding pits (see site 297). At the time of the field survey the presence of cattle precluded a close examination of this particular area, which lay partly under patchy tall gorse. However, pits and spoil relating to probable iron extraction were seen to extend into this area. No other mounds were noted.

Exeter Archaeology, 2003-2004, East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Archaeological Survey, Site No. 2508 (Archive - Survey). SDV351568.

Mounds reported as barrows are probable spoil heaps from extraction pits.
