Plots 546 and 548 on the Salcombe Regis Tithe Map are recorded as 'Pond Close' within the Tithe Apportionment. No ponds are shown in this location on either the Tithe Map or the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps, but a pond is shown within the northern extent of the field on the Ordnance Survey Master Map. The north-south aligned water-course to Salcombe Mouth is shown parallel to the western boundary of these fields, and it is therefore possible that the field name refers to the waterlogged state of the ground as a result of its proximity to this water-course.
