Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The remains of a medieval strip field system are visible on the Salcombe Regis Tithe Map.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Many of the boundaries within this field system have been removed in order to create larger fields; some of the land has also been developed for housing and a north-south aligned road labelled as 'Alma Lane.' Little remains of the former field system.

Pink, F., 2014-2015, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey Desk-Based Assessment (Interpretation). SDV357736.

On the Salcombe Regis Tithe Map of 1839 there is a collection of 27 fields with elongated curving boundaries, located to the east of Salcombe Hill. They are orientated on an E-W aligned axis, and include plots 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, 227, 228, 235, 236, 237, 238, 239, 240, 241, 242, 242a, 252, 259, 260, 261, 262, 263, 263a, 264, 265, 266, and 267. Given their shape and form it is possible that they represent the remains of a fossilised medieval strip field system. By the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps (1880-1899 and 1904-6) many of the boundaries within this field system have been removed in order to create larger fields; some of the land has also been developed for housing and a north-south aligned road labelled as 'Alma Lane.'
