The field name 'Saltern' within plot 694 on the Otterton Tithe Map of 1844 may indicate the presence of a saltern within the vicinity. A sub-oval feature is illustrated against the eastern boundary of the field on the Tithe Map. This feature is illustrated on both the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps, but is illustrated and labelled as a 'Pond' on the Ordnance Survey Master Map.
