The cottage at Matford Kilns referred to as newly erected in a sale notice of 1897. It was stone built with a slate roof and had three bedrooms.

A building is illustrated on the western bank of the Exeter Canal on the Exminster Tithe Map of 1842. A building is present in this location on both the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps where it is labelled as 'Canal Cottage.' The building is not present on the Ordnance Survey Master Map indicating that it had been demolished prior to 2015.
