In 1756 the sergemaker George Cruwys insured, along with his workshops in Newport Street, the property called 'Cowley Moor', which was let to a farmer. The property included a house, stable, poundhouse, pound and engine (presumably a horse-driven mill), with a barn and linhay adjoining, and also a rnilkhouse and two cellars. All these buildings were said to be 'stone, cob and thatched'. Earlier in the 18th century the property appears to have been owned by the Hartnoll family. Earlier references show variations to the place-name of Cowley Moor. A notice in the London Gazette for 1705 referred to it as 'Cowlemore', and it appears to have been known as 'Coullmore' in 1580. Other forms of the name listed in a deed of 1702 are 'Cobbesmore', 'Coilmore' and 'Collamore'.
It is not inconceivable that Cowley Moor House originated as a hunting lodge.
Early forms of the place-name suggest that this may have been a settlement since the deer park was disparked. The house and adjacent buildings were only seen from a distance during the site visit. The house frontage is of early 19th-century appearance, although the building may incorporate earlier fabric.
