Plot 1347 on the Bishopsteignton Tithe Map of 1839 is recorded as 'Pitt Close' within the Tithe Apportionment. The plot is also named 'Pit Close' on an earlier estate map of Radway dated to 1782. The field name may indicate the presence of a pit within the vicinity, although no features are depicted in this plot on the Tithe Map or later First Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey map.
