Parallel linear banks, circa 3.5 metres in width, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1967 onwards, and on images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010. This field immediately south of Clarke’s Thorne was depicted as orchard on the late-19th century mapping and the broadly cross-contour earthworks are interpreted as banks for fruit tree planting, which are likely to be post-medieval or 19th century in date. The earthworks in the north of the area appear to have survived well, and this part of the historic orchard was still extent in 1947 when the tree canopy obscured the ground surface. The south of the area had been cleared of trees by 1947, and earthworks are not clearly visible on aerial photographs; only parts were well enough defined to transcribe using images derived from lidar data captured between 2005 and 2010.
