HER Number:MDV110675
Name:Tree Planting Banks West of East Raddon Cottage

Summary

The remains of probable post-medieval to 19th century date banks made for tree planting and drainage were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2012 as earthworks west of East Raddon Cottage. Earthwork banks are likely to survive.

The remains of probable post-medieval to 19th century date banks made for tree planting and drainage were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2012 as earthworks west of East Raddon Cottage.
Their alignment is cross-contour and they are interpreted as fruit tree planting banks of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that were probably made to enhance drainage within an orchard, draining into the stream that flows along the combe immediately to the east.
The banks do not coincide with any orchard depicted on the on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map, but the parcel of land immediately to the east of the stream was symbolised as an orchard, and it is therefore possible the banks represent a phase of fruit tree cultivation that passed out of use prior to the 1880s, perhaps due to poor drainage.
The field was covered with dense mixed coniferous and non-coniferous tree planting by 1999 largely obscuring the earthwork banks, although some were incompletely visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2012, which might support the interpretation that the banks survive as earthworks.
