Plot 668 on the Sidmouth Tithe Map of 1839 is recorded as 'Pond Meadow' within the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. There is no evidence for a pond depicted within this plot on the Tithe Map or later First Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey map. A watercourse is however shown against the eastern boundary of the field on the Tithe Map, and another is depicted running parallel within the northern boundary of the field on the Ordnance Survey Master Map. It is therefore possible that the field name relates to the waterlogged state of the ground as a result of its proximity to these watercourses.
