Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Depicted on the Throwleigh Tithe Map. Farmstead consists of a large farmhouse on the north-western side, with range of farm buildings joined on the south-eastern side, surrounding a courtyard. Separate barn at the north-eastern end of the farm.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows the buildings to have all been changed, except for the barn to the north of the farm. Listing records state that the farmhouse was modernised at this time, which the map evidence supports. The farm buildings also appear to have been changed and are shown as a much narrower range of buildings on this version of the historic mapping.

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1932, The Place-Names of Devon: Part Two, 453 (Monograph). SDV337894.

Wonson is 'Wnston' in 1238, 'Woneston' in 1244, 1254, 'Wonstone' in 1333, and 'atte Wonston' in 1374. Not a persons name; may mean 'at the crooked stone' in Old English.

White, P., 2013, Previously Unsurveyed Dartmoor Historic Farmsteads (Un-published). SDV352501.

Included on list. No further detail provided.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

The modern map shows the farm to be largely unchanged from the late 19th century historic map.
