Culverhole is recorded as Colverwill in 1330. The name means Dove Spring.

Two buildings are illustrated within plot 576 on the Branscombe Tithe Map of 1840, recorded as 'Farm Houses and Yard' within the Tithe Apportionment. There have been some changes to the layout of the building at the southern end of the plot on the First and Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps, but the building to the north retains a similar layout to that shown on the Tithe Map. The buildings are labelled as 'Culverhole.' Buildings of a similar layout are also depicted within this location on the Ordnance Survey Master Map, with new buildings also now shown to the north, where they are labelled as 'Culverwell.'
