HER Number:MDV111865
Name:Footlands farm, Walkhampton

Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the early-mid 19th century, based on cartographic evidence, although may be older. Depicted on the Tithe Map, it is recorded with Knowle; the farm just to the north. The late 19th century shows only one building (thought to be a barn) and this structure is all that exists today, in use as a dwelling.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Depicted on the Tithe Map; 24-7 on the Walkhampton Apportionment; Knowle and Footlands (house and court, orchards etc.). The Tithe Map shows the farmhouse to the south-east of the farm, with two associated buildings to the north-west and orchard between the farm and the river.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows the land to have changed entirely. Two of the buildings (including the farmhouse) are gone and one building remains within a smaller plot. This is sighted on the site of one of the Tithe Map buildings and is a similar shape, although larger so may represent a renovated building.

White, P., 2013, Previously Unsurveyed Dartmoor Historic Farmsteads (Un-published). SDV352501.

Included in list. No further detail provided.

Ordnance Survey, 2015, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV357601.

The modern map depicts the late 19th century structure as 'Little Knowle Barn', so this appears to have functioned as a barn at some time. It's currently in use as a dwelling. Map object partly based on this source.
