Full description
Exeter Archaeology, 1997, Archaeological Assessment of a Proposed Barn Conversion at Hillside Farm, Bickleton, Instow, 1 (Report - Assessment). SDV355162.
Bickleton is recorded as the Domesday estate of Picaltone. It appears to have been considerably smaller than its immediate neighbours. It may once have been part of a larger holding such as the royal Saxon estate of Fremington. Almost nothing is known about its development between the 12th- and 14th centuries.
A number of late 18th century documents relate to 'Bickleton Manor', which covered a larger area than that recorded in 1086.
Cartographic sources show the layout of the hamlet of Bickleton to have been static from the early 19th century until the present day.
