Structures and earthwork pit and banked features shown as a ‘Rifle Range’ on the Ordnance Survey 2018 MasterMap are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the west of Channing’s Wood, Ogwell. They comprise linear and rectilinear structures set amongst a semi-circular pit, circa 25m long by 15m wide, which is flanked by a curvilinear bank, circa 9m wide. The rifle range is associated with the Second World War Denbury army camp (MDV21906) located to the immediate southeast. A zig-zag shaped ditch, circa 1.5m wide by 10m long, is located to the north of the rifle range and is interpreted as a slit trench. As part of standard NMP/AIM methodology, features that are visible in 1946 and shown on modern digital mapping have not been transcribed.
