An extraction pit of possible medieval to modern date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the northeast of Coombe Cottage. The earthwork pit is semi-circular in shape, measures approximately 37m in length and abuts, and so possibly pre-dates, Stony Lane along its northern edge. The extraction pit is first symbolised on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s and is located within an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded. The former extraction pit remains visible as a possible slight earthwork pit on Lidar-derived images of between 1998-2007, although appears to have been largely levelled.
