An enclosure ditch of potential prehistoric date is visible as a cropmark ditch on aerial photographs of 1988 and 1989, to the northwest of Hayes Barton. The well-defined cropmark is visible on the southern side of a prominent hilltop and closely respects the 90m contour line. It is curvilinear in shape, with a break approximately 22m wide representing a possible entrance-way. A possible internal curvilinear cropmark was also recorded to the southwest. The nature of the evidence strongly supports a prehistoric date for the cropmark, possibly representing the southern half of a hilltop enclosure, encompassing an area of approximately 1.65 hectares. A flint scatter and barrow recorded within the immediate vicinity adds further support to this interpretation. Further field investigation, in particular geophysical survey, is strongly recommended.
