Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

The remains of earthwork ridges were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 to the south of Burnthouse Cottages, Whimple.
The banks are on average 4 metres wide and are aligned obliquely cross-contour. They are interpreted as probable fruit tree planting banks of post-medieval to 20th century date, made to enhance drainage within an orchard.
The banks do not coincide with an orchard depicted on the on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map but do possibly coincide with an enclosed area shown on the Tithe Map for Whimple. This might support the interpretation that the orchard passed out of use between circa 1840 and 1880. The former orchard enclosure boundary is also visible as a shallow earthwork ditch, abutted by a second possibly former boundary ditch not depicted on the Tithe Map, and recorded separately.
The orchard banks and enclosure boundary ditch are likely to survive as low earthworks
