A possible former quarry of medieval to post-medieval date was visible as an earthwork pit to the north-west of Madges Cross on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005.
The pit does not correspond with any quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Whimple or the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map, supporting the interpretation that it had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The pit appeared overgrown and waterlogged on aerial photographs of November 1946 and may have been used as a pond. Along with the former field boundaries in this area the profile of the pit was probably reduced by ploughing in the second half of the 20th century and is visible as a shallow hollow on images derived from lidar.
