Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.
A possible former quarry of medieval to post-medieval date was visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005, on the gentle north-west facing slopes to east of Gribble Lane, Rockbeare.
The pit does not correspond with any quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Rockbeare or the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map, and indeed its location appears to be cut by a post medieval field boundary. This might support the interpretation that it had passed out of use prior to the enclosure of the Barton Fields in this area.
Dean, R., 2018, Land either side of Percy Wakely Wood, Rockbeare: Geophysical Survey (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV361562.
A magnetometer survey was undertaken by Substrata to provide a relatively fast and cost-effective evaluation of any buried archaeology on land either side of Percy Wakley Wood, Rockbeare.
The differences in magnetic responses across the Survey Area were sufficient to be able to differentiate between anomalies representing possible buried archaeology and background magnetic responses. One group is likely to represent the in-filling of a former quarry recorded in the Rockbeare tithe map and on aerial photographs and LiDAR.
