Cottages once stood in the vicinity of the gatehouse (sy29ne/21/1) of shute barton according to local report. Pulled down in the 19th century. Vis=estimated -/-/1984 (national trust). In the 19th century a number of thatched cottages stood in the vicinity of the gatehouse, they are described in a national trust leaflet as 'cottages ornes' in the romantic taste of the early 19th century (national trust).
