Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and drainage from the post-medieval period to the 20th century were visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar as earthwork banks to the south of Bramley Gardens, Whimple.
The banks measured approximately 7 to 8 metres wide and were aligned across the contours of a west facing combe. The banks correspond largely with an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map, but areas to the northern and eastern edges may have been levelled.
The orchard remained heavily planted into the 1940s but had been largely cleared by the late 1960s. The banks remained clearly visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar captured in 2005.
