A pit, possibly a former quarry or extractive pit of medieval to post-medieval date, was visible as a shallow earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data near the summit of a hill to the south-west of Whimple. The pit is oval and measures approximately 50 by 35 metres in size.
It is not marked on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch map for Whimple and the Tithe Apportionments describe the plot into which it falls as arable. It therefore probably passed out of use some time prior to the 1840s.
