The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and drainage improvement in an orchard of probable 20th century date were visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data as earthwork banks to the west of Bramley Gardens, Whimple.
The banks measured approximately 7 metres wide and were aligned across the contours of the north and west-facing slopes to west of Bramley Gardens.
The banks did not correspond with an orchard plot depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map and the trees appear to be recently planted in 1946, which supports the interpretation that the orchard is of early 20th century date, probably associated with the expansion of Whiteways Cider, based in Whimple.
The orchard remained planted with trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010, albeit less densely. This supports the interpretation that two the orchard remains in use and the ridges probably survive as low earthwork banks. The banks cross the site of a possible former quarry in the north-west corner of the orchard, recorded separately.
