The banks correspond with a depicted orchard.

The orchard remained densely planted.

The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in orchards of probable post-medieval to 20th century date were visible on aerial photographs as extensive earthwork banks on the slopes to the south and west of Ashclyst Farm, Broadclyst.
The ridges correspond with a large area of an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map, and the establishment of the orchards therefore predates the 1880s.
The orchard remained densely planted into the 1940s but had been cleared of all trees by 1967, leaving the underlying banks clearly visible as earthworks on a variety of orientations. The banks cannot be seen on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2010 and have probably been levelled.
