Possible former field boundaries of possible medieval or post-medieval date were visible on aerial photographs and images derived from lidar data as earthwork ditches in two fields to the north of Higher Burrowton, Broadclyst.
The majority of the earthworks did not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Broadclyst. The exception, centred on circa SY00349703, corresponds with the western edge of a plot (966 on the Tithe Map) listed as an orchard on the Tithe Apportionments for Broadclyst. This supports the interpretation that the ditches represented field boundaries that had been removed prior to the 1840s, and probably prior to the southwestern field’s use as an orchard. It is possible that the earthworks are indicative of settlement contraction. This might also be supported by the name Lower Burrowton, which could indicate a contraction from a larger hamlet. Subtle traces earthwork ditches remained visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005.
