The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage in orchards of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as earthwork banks at Crockenhayes Farm, Whimple.
The ridges correspond with orchard planting depicted on the Ordnance Survey second edition 25inch map, and therefore probably remained in use into the 20th century. The tree planting has been cleared and the earthwork banks can be seen on aerial photographs of 1946. The ridges remained visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010 and probably survive as earthwork banks.
