Summary

A possible former orchard of post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as the remains of slight earthwork ridges on a ditch enclosed earthwork platform to the west of Channons Farm, Broad Clyst. The banks were probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage. The ridges were not noted on images taken in 2010 and have probably been levelled.

A possible former orchard of post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as the remains of slight earthwork ridges on a ditch enclosed earthwork platform to the west of Channons Farm, Broad Clyst.
The ridges were approximately 5 metres wide and aligned roughly west-south-west to north-north-east on an earthwork platform enclosed by a ditch up to circa 5 metres wide, probably the remains of a former field boundary.
The enclosed area does not correspond with an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map or the Tithe Map for Broad Clyst, and had therefore ceased to be used as an orchard by the 1840s.
This area of ridges and associated earthworks were not noted on images taken in 2010 and have probably been levelled.
