HER Number:MDV112575
Name:Former Orchard at Lower Wilyards Farm, Broad Clyst

Summary

A former orchard of post-medieval to 20th century date was visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data as the remains of slight earthwork ridges at Lower Wilyards Farm, Broad Clyst. The banks were probably made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting. The ridges probably survive as earthwork banks.

A former orchard of post-medieval to 20th century date was visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data as the remains of slight earthwork ridges at Lower Wilyards Farm, Broad Clyst.
The banks were probably made to provide increased soil depth for fruit tree planting, and were typically built crossing the contours of the slope to enhance drainage. The visible ridges were circa 6 metres wide and orientated roughly north-north-west.
The enclosed area does not correspond with any orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map, but does correspond with plot listed on the Tithe Map for Broad Clyst listed as an orchard. It is therefore probable that the orchard passed out of use between the 1840s and 1880s.
The banks remained visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005.
