Orchards of possible post-medieval origin were located on the gentle combe slopes immediately north-west of Great Barton Farm. The distinctive remains of earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s onwards.
The ridges fall within a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map and are approximately 6 metres apart.
The orchard remained planted on aerial photographs of the 1940s but was approximately half cleared of trees by 1964 when the underlying tree planting ridges were clearly visible as low earthwork banks. The ridges remained clearly visible as earthworks on a plot mostly cleared of trees on digital images derived aerial photographs of 2010 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010.
