Summary
A small possible orchard of post-medieval origin was located on the gentle combe slopes south-east of Great Barton Farm, Clyst St. Lawrence. The remains of distinctive earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010.

The remains of distinctive earthwork ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010.
The ridges did not correspond with any orchards depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map and had probably therefore passed out of use prior to the 1880s. As the ridges were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2010, it is likely that they survive as low earthwork banks.
