Possible extraction pits of potential medieval date are visible as a series of earthwork pits and banked feature on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, at Woodbury Salterton. The earthworks occupy an area of approximately 0.92 hectares of land on the eastern edge of Woodbury Salterton. They comprise three discrete oval shaped earthwork pits, measuring up to 65m in length, which are interspersed with an irregular shaped and diffuse earthwork bank, possibly representing up-cast material derived from excavation of the pits. The nature and date of the earthworks are, however, largely unclear. It seems most likely they represent the remains of some small-scale extractive industry which appears to pre-date establishment of the historic field system depicted on the parish tithe map of approximately 1838-48. The earthworks remain visible on Lidar-derived images of 2005.
