The ditches did not correspond with boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map or the Tithe Map for Clyst Hydon, which might support the interpretation that they had been removed prior to circa 1840. They did, however, fall comfortably within the historic field pattern, been characterised as being based upon medieval strip fields, and were possibly aligned on a corner and kink in the line a depicted field enclosure. It is possible the ditches were therefore evidence of the western ends of two former field boundaries potentially of medieval origin that had been removed by circa 1840.
