An extraction pit of possible post-medieval to modern date is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the northwest of Winkleigh Farm. The semi-circular shaped earthwork measures approximately 28m by 28m and abuts an extant field boundary along its southeastern edge. The extraction pit appears to be overlain by, and so pre-date, the site of an orchard which is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. It remains visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2010.
