'500 Yds' marked.

Exeter Archaeology, 2003, East Devon Heathlands Archaeological Survey, 10 and 24, Part 1; 19-20, Part 2: Gazetteer, Site No. 73 (Report - Survey). SDV101648.

WWII rifle range marker cut into by recent military trench. Disused rifle range marked on Ordnance Survey 1956/19611:10560 map (SY 0385/0485), including butts, 100, 300 and 500-yard markers (see sites 64, 66, 67) (associated with World War Two camp to south, see site 69). Extends from 500 yard marker at 0394 8566 in north-northeast direction to butts at SY 0403 8591. At SY 03876 85455 a substantial bank runs east-west between trackways and appears to represent the 500- yard marker as depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1961 map. The bank measures 37 metres east-west by 7.5 metres north south by 3 metres high. Bank returns for 4.5 metres to south at west end. To south of bank sunken area (presumably excavated for bank material) on surface bank appears to consist of topsoil/pebbles and clinker. Bank has flat top, in centre of which is cut out measuring 1m north-south by 2 metres east-west by 0.5 metre deep, with additional hollows on north and south sides. This is probably a recent feature. Mound is grass covered with trees both on the mound and surrounding. Situated on north facing slope.

Good candidate for interpretation together with other associated markers and butts.
