Full description

Exeter Archaeology, 2003, East Devon Heathlands Archaeological Survey, 10, Part 1; 21, Part 2: Gazetteer, Site No. 77 (Report - Survey). SDV101648.

One of four rectangular features shown on DCC 1946 aerial photograph on northern edge of World War Two camp (see site 69), and southern end of rifle range (see sites 74–76). Features consist of rectangular slightly sunken area delimited by substantial earthen banks. Areas may have contained buildings, perhaps magazines associated with rifle range, with surrounding banks as blast ‘walls’. Feature circa 27 metres northeast southwest by circa 15 metres northwest-southeast. Banks at southwest end disturbed, area within feature contains some tall gorse, trees and dumped woodland material. Remnants of four brick entrance steps on north side in undergrowth.

One of four rectangular features shown on 1946 aerial photograph on north edge of World War Two camp. Features consist of rectangular slightly sunken area delimited by substantial earthen banks. Areas may have contained buildings, perhaps magazines associated with the rifle range, with surrounding banks as blast walls.

Feature measures circa 27 metres north-east/south-west by 15 metres north-west/south-east. Banks at southwest end are disturbed; area within feature contains tall gorse, trees and dumped woodland material. Remnants of four brick entrance steps on northern side in undergrowth.

Adjacent to major trackways. Section of bank at southwest end has been removed for access and path have eroded bank on northwest side and elsewhere.

Advise military personnel of significance of feature to avert damage as area is used for training activities. Candidate for interpretation of World War Two features.
