Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Building is depicted on the early 20th century historic map, with a shed adjoining on the north-western side.

Bungalow is visible on the aerial photography.

Phoenix Cottage is depicted on the modern mapping, although it is not labelled and the cottage to the south (thought to be named Stone Cottage) is incorrectly marked as Phoenix Cottage. Amendment requested from Master Map.

Owner of the nearby Frenchbeer Farm states that this timber-framed bungalow was built in 1900-1901 by Robert Stark as a residence for his gardener.

Square, single storey timber built and clad dwelling (7.5 by 7.5m) with a central brickwork chimney. Single entrance door on the eastern elevation, two windows to each of the east, south and west elevations, and three to the north. Shed/garage and toilet outside of similar construction. Roof is of steel; 1906 drawings indicate originally it was corrugated iron.
History of the building investigated; built for an estate worker of Robert Stark between 1900-1905. A number of previous occupants listed. A utilitarian building; considerably altered on east and north sides, as well as replacement roof added.
Not unique or exceptional; should not be considered a heritage asset.
