Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, to the west of The Mattocks. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1946, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been thinned out, leaving a series of parallel northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. The orchard banks are more clearly visible on aerial photographs of 1963, by which time the fruit trees have been completely cleared. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.29 hectares of gentle southwest facing slope, within a rectilinear shaped plot depicted on the First Edition OS map. The site of the orchard appears to overly the site of a former extraction pit located at its southern extent. Traces of the orchard banks survive within this pit on aerial photographs of 2000, although appear to have been completely levelled elsewhere.
