HER Number:MDV112873
Name:Orchard East of Chillacombe Farm

Summary

An orchard of possible post-medieval origin was located on the south facing slopes east of Chillacombe Farm, Broad Clyst. The distinctive remains of ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1960s. The banks cannot be seen as earthworks on recent images and have probably been levelled.

An orchard was located on the south facing slopes east of Chillacombe Farm, Broad Clyst. The distinctive remains of ridges or banks, made to provide increased soil depth and improved drainage for fruit tree planting, were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1967.
The earthwork banks correspond with an area symbolised as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition Map of the 1880s-1890s, and the orchard was therefore probably of post-medieval origin. The orchard remained densely planted with trees into the 1940s and was therefore probably cleared of planting in the mid-20th century.
The banks cannot be seen as earthworks on recent aerial photographs or digital images derived from lidar data available to the survey and have therefore probably been levelled.
