Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to modern date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, at Great Houndbeare Farm. Orchards are depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. Aerial photographs from 1946 until 1966 show that the orchards are partly covered with trees, although the earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, are visible. The fruit trees have been completely cleared by 1989. The banks are north to south and northeast to southwest aligned and occupy an area of approximately 1.30 hectares of gentle northwest facing slope, within two plots depicted on the First Edition OS map. The orchard banks remain largely visible as earthwork banks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
